A slight upset in the first round of the 2009 AJHL South playoffs as the 5th place Camrose Kodiaks defeat the 4th place Calgary Canucks 3-2 on Wednesday night in Camrose to take the series 3 games to 1.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first period the Canucks battled back through an evenly played, scoreless, second period before Mitchell Smith (McCullough, Curran) lit it up in the third to move within 1 goal.
Mitchell Smith continued to lead the way for the Canucks with a nice unnassisted tally with just 1 1/2 minutes remaining setting up what appeared to be the 3rd OT game of the series.
Camrose foiled the come back try with another goal of their own in the dying seconds to end the season for the Canucks. Another great game in a very good series that could have gone either way. Good effort by the Canucks in a fairly successful season overall.
With many returning players the 2009/2010 looks promising. Look forward to another exciting season. Aaron Dell had 26 saves on 29 shots in net for the Canucks. Mitchell Smith, with 2 goals, was chosen as the Canucks game star.

Next Home Game March 6th @ 7:30pm Max Bell Arena
The Canucks move back into the series with a great effort rewarded by a 4-3 win in Camrose on Tuesday night. Another of the tight contests we have come to expect this season between these two evenly matched teams. The Canucks now at 2-1 in the series need another great effort on Wednesday night in Camrose to move the series back to Max Bell on Friday. Should be another great game on Wednesday.
Aaron Dell was the difference in this one with 44 saves on 47 shots in net for the Canucks.
Dylan Trumble was chosen as the Canucks game star.
Dylan Trumble, John Dunbar, Tyson Viehweger and Sean Pollard were the Canucks marksmen.

Next Home Game March 6th @ 7:30pm Max Bell Arena
The Kodiaks take a 2-0 strangle hold on the 1st round series on Sunday night with their second OT win in as many nights.
A bit different game than Saturday night as both teams seemed comfortable feeling each other out and although a big difference in shots on net the play was relatively even.
The outcome was very similar on this second night as the Kodiaks put up a 4-3 OT win. A couple of mistakes by the Canucks defence was the difference. The Canucks have been very successful this year in Camrose so although down 2-0 you still have to win 3 games to move on.
The next test is Tuesday night in Camrose and it will show who wants this the most.
Aaron Dell had 34 saves on 38 shots in net for the Canucks and Mitchell Smith was chosen as the Canucks game star.
Dylan Trumble, Brad Ryan and Mitchell Smith were the Canucks marksmen.

The Canucks and Kodiaks put on the display that everyone expected in game 1 of the best of 5 first round playoff matchup.
A wildely entertaining game with hard hitting, fast paced back and forth action and great goaltending at both ends. Unfortunately for the Canucks the last lucky bounce went to the Kodiaks as they skate off with a 3-2 OT win and take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Game 2 goes Sunday night at Max Bell, 7:30 PM. A similar effort with a different result is expected from the Canucks tonight. Aaron Dell had 32 saves on 35 shots in net for the Canucks and was chosen as the Canucks game star. Kodie Curran and John Dunbar were the Canucks marksmen.

The Canucks finished off the regular season on a losing note on Tuesday night at
Max Bell with 6-4 loss to the Sherwood Park Crusaders. The Canucks appeared to be saving themselves for the first round matchup vs the Camrose Kodiaks on Saturday as they could not sustain any offensive charge or contain the speedy Crusaders. A different type of game and effort will be required on Saturday night to begin the best of 5 series with Camrose. Fortunately for the Canucks they have home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
Aaron Dell had 39 saves on 45 shots in net for the Canucks.
John Dunbar was chosen as the Canucks game star.
Canucks next home games are Saturday,
Feb 28 and Sunday March 1, 7:30 PM at
Max Bell as they open the 2009 playoff schedule vs the Camrose Kodiaks.
Should be another great series.
